A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal road crash in Galway this morning in which a mother and her daughter were killed.
Both victims died at around 6.00am when their car was hit by a trailer that became detached from a truck around five kilometres north of Galway city on the N17 to Tuam.
The woman is in her 50s, the daugher in her 20s. They are believed to be from the area.
The man - who is understood to be a foreign national and in his 30s - is being held at Millstreet Garda Station in the city under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
A number of diversions were in place while the emergency services attend the scene, and a section of the road between Galway and Claregalway were sealed off.
Earlier, a crash between a car and a truck in Co Cork left a man dead. The crash at Knockardandrum, Charleville, on the Limerick-to-Cork road took place at around 5.20am.
The man who died was the driver of the car.
A total of 107 people have been killed so far this year on Irish roads.
