Police are continuing to question a man today about the brutal murder of a teenage girl near Belfast.
The man was arrested by officers investigating the killing of Megan McAlorum (16) whose half-naked body was found in a wooded area close to a quarry overlooking the city.
Detectives are waiting for the results of the post-mortem examination to establish whether she had been sexually assaulted.
Police have yet to disclose any motive for the murder, which has shattered the young victim's family and plunged her community into a state of bewildered shock and anger.
The body of the teenager, who had only just left high school, remained at the scene near Dunmurry throughout much of yesterday as forensic experts scoured the area for clues.
They said the body was discovered by local people at around the same time Megan had been reported missing from her Glencolin Way home on the edge of the Lenadoon estate in West Belfast. She had failed to return from an Easter Sunday night out.
Chief Inspector Raymond Murray said Megan had suffered head injuries. "All murders are brutal and all murders are savage," he said. "It is difficult to quantify one above the other but, at the end of the day, a 16-year-old girl, we believe, is found murdered in a quarry area.
"What more can we say, it's a brutal murder." Megan had been at a local bar, The Hunting Lodge, on Sunday night before she vanished.
