Man charged in fatal Antrim shooting case

A 22-year-old man was tonight charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

A 22-year-old man was tonight charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

The charges relate to an incident in which a 21-year-old man was shot dead by police in a car which failed to stop in County Antrim.

The man will appear at Craigavon Magistrates' Court tomorrow. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when police opened fire on a red Vauxhall Cavalier after it smashed through a road block at Upper Ballinderry near Lisburn.

Mr Neil McCondille, from Bleary Craigavon, was hit and died later in hospital. A second man in the car suffered gunshot wounds to the arm. The incident is currently being investigated by Police Ombudsman Ms Nuala O'Loan's office.

According to security sources a quantity of drugs and a gun were found in the vehicle.

It is the first time the Police Ombudsman has investigated a fatal police shooting and officers will be attempting to establish whether officers had no other option but to open fire.

The dead man had become a father last weekend when his girlfriend gave birth to a baby girl.
