Solicitor for Mr Donovan Tara Godfrey said she would not be making any application for bail at this stage.

Furthermore, she asked that the court direct that Mr Donovan be psychiatrically assessed by the visiting psychiatrist to Limerick Prison.

Ms Godfrey also said the press coverage of the case has given the impression that Mr Donovan was charged with other offences apart from the Section 4 Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

She urged Judge Malone to direct the media that reporting of the case keep within the parameters of what has been said in court.

Judge Malone said: "I am not giving any such direction. The media is well aware of its responsibilities."

He remanded Mr Donovan to reappear before Ennis District Court on Friday and directed that he be psychiatrically assessed.
