A man charged with arson at a house in Roscommon where a five-year-old girl died has spent the past three weeks since his arrest in solitary confinement at his own request, a court has been told.

John Lynch (33), Church View, Boyle, Co Roscommon, was refused bail when he appeared before Harristown District Court.

Solicitor Ciara Macklin, defending, said her client was in solitary confinement since his arrest last month and was in lock-up 23 hours a day.

Mr Lynch is charged with arson at Termon Road, Boyle, Co Roscommon, on October 3rd. He is also charged with assaulting Anita O’Hara at Church View, Boyle, on the same date.

Mari Keane-Connolly (5) died in the fire at Termon Road. Mr Lynch gave a number of undertakings to the court but Judge Geoffrey Browne denied the bail application and remanded him in custody to appear before Harristown District Court next Friday.
