A man (28) has been remanded in custody after he was charged today with the manslaughter of another man in Cork city earlier this year.

Connie Horgan appeared before Cork District Court where he was charged with the unlawful killing of Polish man Ariel Cegielka (30) on Lower Oliver Plunkett St on April 17th last.

Insp Gary McPolin told the court a book of evidence in the case had been served on Mr Horgan, whose address was given as St Vincent's Hostel, Anglesea Street, Cork.

Insp McPolin said the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed the matter be tried on indictment at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

Mr Horgan was previously charged with assault causing harm to Mr Cegielka, who died at Cork University Hospital on April 19th last.

Mr Cegielka failed to regain consciousness after being assaulted and a postmortem by the Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Michael Curtis, found he had suffered serious head injuries.

Insp McPolin said the DPP had directed the assault charge and another charge of producing an offensive weapon laid against Mr Horgan both be withdrawn. He said that gardaí were seeking a remand in custody, and Judge Tim Lucey remanded the accused in custody to appear at Cork Circuit Criminal Court on November 8th next.

Mr Cegielka had been in Ireland for a number of years and was living at the Simon Shelter at Anderson's Quay in Cork city centre at the time that he was fatally assaulted.
