A 21-year-old Briton appeared in court in Greece yesterday charged with the manslaughter of an Irish-born teenage tourist.

Mr Peter Navarro is charged with the manslaughter of Mr Paddy Doran (17), from Peterborough, England, who died after sustaining a neck wound during a nightclub brawl in the resort of Faliraki, on the island of Rhodes.

Mr Navarro, Leasowe, Wirral, Merseyside, appeared before investigating magistrates on the island and was remanded in custody to reappear in court on Sunday.

A spokeswoman for the British Foreign Office said nine other Britons, charged with causing an affray in connection with the death, also appeared before magistrates and have been detained until Sunday.

Of the 18 Britons originally held, seven have now been released. One has been charged with drug offences not connected with the incident.

The victim became involved in a fight with 10 other Britons in a club called Q at about 1 a.m. on Monday.

Mr Doran, said to be an Irish-born temporary resident of Faliraki, was stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle, according to local police.

A journalist for the Faliraki Mirror said of the 10 arrested, two were friends of the victim and seven friends of the accused.

He said that following the death, the town's mayor was working with police and the public prosecutor to crack down on tour operators leading large groups on pub crawls.

Mr Navarro and one of the other suspects booked his holiday through travel firm Club 18-30. A spokesperson for the tour group said: "Club 18-30 understand that two holidaymakers who travelled to Rhodes with the company are among a total of 10 British holidaymakers who have been charged with a variety of offences following the incident that led to the tragic death of a holidaymaker in Faliraki on Monday night." - (PA)
