Swedish prosecutors have today charged a man who has confessed to killing Swedish Foreign Minister Ms Anna Lindh in September.
Having denied any involvement since his arrest on September 24th, Mr Mijailo Mijailovic confessed last week to the attack but told prosecutors and his defence lawyer the deed had been unplanned and lacked political motive.
He said he stabbed Ms Lindh several times with a knife and said Jesus told him to do so, police said today.
Prosecutors charged Mr Mijailovic with murder today, saying forensic evidence tied him to the murder weapon and the victim.
Mr Leif Jennekvist, the Stockholm police Commissioner who led the murder investigation, told reporters that Mr Mijailovic had made up his mind to kill Ms Lindh during the 14 minutes from when he saw her enter the central Stockholm department store and the deed on September 10th.
"He decided to kill her, and he did it. He says he did it at the command of an inner voice belonging to Jesus," Mr Jennekvist said.
Mr Linnea Arvidsson, manager of the department store boutique where Ms Lindh was killed, told police she witnessed the attack at close range and heard the assailant say words to the effect of "You got what you deserved."
Mr Mijailovic, a 25-year-old high-school drop-out born in Sweden to Serbian immigrant parents, goes on trial on Wednesday and faces between 10 years and life in prison if convicted for murder.
