A man appeared in court yesterday charged with stealing the bag of a 60-year-old tourist after she had been knocked down by a bus in O'Connell Street, Dublin.

Jonathan Brophy (23), a drug addict from Richmond Park, Bray, Co Wicklow, was charged with stealing a handbag, passport, €1,000 in cash, car and house keys from the woman on September 15th last.

Marie Buckland, from Warwickshire, England, suffered serious head injuries as a result of the accident involving a Dublin Bus vehicle as she and a friend were crossing the road at the Spire monument. She never regained consciousness and died in hospital just over a week later.

Yesterday in Dublin District Court, Sgt Brian Cullen said he arrested Mr Brophy on Tuesday and after he was charged later that day, he had no comment to make.

He asked that the accused be remanded in custody as there were two warrants for his arrest relating to previous alleged failures to appear in court.

A defence solicitor said there was no application for bail but he asked that the accused receive treatment for a drug problem while in custody. Judge Anne Watkin remanded him in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court on October 5th.

Gardaí yesterday renewed an appeal to trace other property taken from Ms Buckland's bags, including a 2005 diary.
