Gardaí told the court yesterday that it was the State's case that Shane Shapland should be sent forward for trial in the near future and that the case file was nearing completion.

John Devane, the accused's solicitor, told Limerick District Court that his client was appearing in court by arrangement.

He said it was a serious matter which involved an alleged shooting at a vehicle carrying gardaí.

Gardaí said they would not oppose bail, subject to certain conditions being met.

Mr Devane added that the completion of the book of evidence was in its latter stages at the office of the DPP.

Judge Tom O'Donnell remanded the accused man in custody.

The accused has leave to apply for bail on his own bond of €250. He is to appear again before Limerick District Court on April 28th next.

The judge also ordered that he should sign on twice weekly at Henry Street Garda station.

He must also hand in his passport or other relevant travel documents.
