An Armagh man faces a life sentence after being convicted yesterday of murdering retired police reservist Mr Cyril Stewart in front of his wife, Joan, in March last year. Barry Paul Morgan (24), from Banbrook Hill, Armagh, denied being one of two gunmen who shot Mr Stewart (52) seven times in the Armagh car-park of Safeways supermarket. He was shot seven times. Mr Justice Higgins told Morgan he would give his reasons for conviction later, when he will also pass sentence.

A second man, Mr Anthony John McElkenny (35), of Gortin Park, Coalisland, walked free after being acquitted of charges of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to collect information useful to terrorists.
