A man in his 30s was in a critical condition in hospital last night following an explosion at the Glenpatrick Spring Water plant in Clonmel, Co Tipperary, in which six workers were injured.

The accident happened shortly before lunchtime when a boiler exploded in a filling room at the plant.

The workers, all men, were taken to St Joseph's Hospital in Clonmel, from where five were transferred to Our Lady's Hospital in Cashel, and the sixth to Waterford Regional Hospital, where he was being treated in the intensive care unit. A spokeswoman described his condition as critical.

The five men taken to Cashel were all discharged after treatment.

While local gardai attended the scene of the accident, a Garda spokesman said an investigation was primarily a matter for the Health and Safety Authority.

A company spokesman could not be contacted for comment.
