A MAN in his 20s was in a critical condition in hospital yesterday following a fall at a Limerick hotel.

Paramedics and gardaí were called to the Hilton hotel on the Ennis Road shortly after 4am on Sunday after the man was found unconscious following a fall from a staircase.

The victim, who is from Ennis in Co Clare, was not staying at the hotel but had entered the building with a friend shortly before the accident took place.

After realising that neither man was staying at the hotel the receptionist offered to call them a taxi and allowed them to wait in the lobby.

According to gardaí both men were drunk when they arrived at the hotel and one of them wandered off, possibly to find a bathroom, when he fell sideways over a staircase.

“There is no suggestion of anyone else being involved and we are treating it as an unfortunate tragic accident,” said a Garda spokesman.

The man was unconscious when he was taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick. He was transferred to Cork University Hospital a few hours later due to the nature of his injuries.
