Man drowns crossing Donegal sea inlet

A 21 year-old male has drowned in Co Donegal after taking a shortcut across a narrow sea channel, the Garda said today.

The young man was using the crossing between Bunbeg and Rannafast when he got into difficulties at around 4 a.m. this morning.

A Sligo air corps helicopter recovered the young man from the sea some time after 7a.m. The alarm was raised by the young man’s friend.Meanwhile, the search for a sixteen year-old youth off the coast of Belmullet, Co Mayo, resumed this morning, two days after the boat he was travelling in with his father sank.

The recovered man was taken from the sea hours after the alarm was raised when sheep were seen floating in the sea.There was no-one else aboard the vessel which was transporting livestoock from France to the island of Iniskea.
