A man is due for court in Limerick later today after a stabbing that left a psychiatrist in a critical condition and a colleague in hospital.
The stabbing took place at St Anne's Psychiatric Day Hospital in Limerick yesterday afternoon.
Psychiatrist Anamath Pullela is in a critical condition following the assault. Kathleen Burns, a clinical psychologist, also suffered multiple stab wounds in the attack, but her injuries are not life threatening.
A man (31) who was released from prison last year after serving a lengthy sentence for manslaughter was questioned by gardaí about the attack last night and is due before the courts today.
It is understood that the man suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and had been released from a psychiatric care unit just days before the assault.
A knife has been recovered.
A spokesman for the HSE said that counselling and other appropriate supports had been put in place for staff.
