A man is due to appear in Roscommon District Court next week, following an attack on a publican at his premises in Roscommon town.
Ned Gilligan, who owns the Green Rooster on Church Street in Roscommon, sustained head injuries, a broken nose and bruising during the attack which is reported to have occurred on Thursday night.
It is understood that Mr Gilligan had approached a group of four men who were drinking in the bar and who allegedly became involved in a row.
When he asked them to leave, one of the group is said to have hit him on the head with a bar stool and he was then struck with a pool cue. Mr Gilligan says he managed to drag himself into the ladies toilet. The publican's teenage son and daughter are said to have witnessed the incident. A member of staff who tried to assist was struck with a broken pool cue and had to have seven stitches to his head, while a customer was punched in the face.
A man was arrested by gardaí and appeared yesterday in court in Glenamaddy, Co Galway, where he was remanded to appear again in Roscommon District Court on Tuesday.
The incident has been condemned by the Vintners' Federation of Ireland and local publicans.
