A man died from an electric shock when he climbed a high-voltage electricity pylon in Cork last night.

Gardaí said the victim, understood to be in his 20s, was killed instantly when he touched the pylon at Green Hills Court on the South Douglas Road in Cork city.

The incident happened shortly after 11pm. The victim is said to be from the local area.

Fire crews had to remove the man's remains from the pylon before the body was taken to Cork University Hospital where a postmortem examination will be carried out later.

The scene has been sealed off for a forensic examination by gardaí.
