Gardaí in Cork are expected to launch a murder inquiry later today following the completion of a post-mortem on the body of a 51 year old man injured during a row outside a pub in the city.
The dead man, named locally as Gerard Delaney, was living in Mahon, was one of a group of men who drove to the Manhattan Bar on Lower Friar’s Walk in Ballyphehane at around 12.30am and confronted a group drinking there.
The row spilled out into area outside the pub and at one point is understood to have involved up to 25 people with some using baseball bats, pickaxe handles and other implements.
It’s understood the deceased suffered head and stab injuries but was brought by his friends to a house in Ballyphehane and from there taken to Cork University Hospital where he later died of his injuries.
Gardaí believe last night’s incident is related to an ongoing feud between two families on the southside of Cork city which has been simmering for over a year.
Two members of the faction who were drinking in the Manhattan, a man and a woman, were later taken by ambulance to the Mercy University Hospital for treatment for their injuries.
Gardaí sealed off the area outside the pub and have begun a technical examination of the area while they have also begun checking CCTV cameras in the area to see if the fight was captured on camera.
Anyone who witnessed the fight or has any information that can assist gardaí in their investigation is asked to contact Togher Garda station in confidence on 021-4947120.
