Man for court over jail stabbing

A man is appearing in court his afternoon charged in relation to the death of a fellow inmate at Mountjoy prison in Dublin.

A man is appearing in court his afternoon charged in relation to the death of a fellow inmate at Mountjoy prison in Dublin.

The prisoner was arrested yesterday morning and was questioned at the jail's Garda Station.

Derek Glennon (24) was stabbed a number of times during a scuffle on Mountjoy's D-wing landing at 5.40pm on Monday, just before evening recess.

Gardaí said a man in his 30s was detained by detectives yesterday morning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Prison officers were on the scene within seconds of the attack, but the inmate died in the Mater Hospital a short time later.

Glennon, from Stanaway Road in Crumlin, Dublin, had been serving 10 years for manslaughter.

He was jailed in January 2004 after pleading guilty to the unlawful killing of a cyclist in Crumlin in December 2002 while driving a stolen car.

He escaped in October 2005 while serving a five-year sentence and was subsequently seized and jailed for five years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
