A man found with £1.4 million worth of heroin and £82,000 cash in a Dublin hotel has been jailed for eight years

A man found with £1.4 million worth of heroin and £82,000 cash in a Dublin hotel has been jailed for eight years. Anthony McGrath, who was escorted to Dublin Circuit Criminal Court by the armed Garda Emergency Response Unit, was previously jailed for 10 years for importing cannabis into England.

McGrath (48), from Dublin, with an address in England at Parkmore Close, Woodford Green, Essex, pleaded guilty to importing 7 kg of heroin on March 18th, 1999.

Det Sgt Stephen Courage, North Inner City Drugs Unit, told Mr Paul O'Higgins SC, prosecuting, that gardai i raided McGrath's room at the Sunnybank Hotel and found 2 kg of heroin and £82,000 cash. Five kilos of heroin were found in another hotel room. The drugs had a minimum street value of £1.4 million.

Mr Patrick Gageby SC, defending, said McGrath had i and admitted his guilt. Judge Elizabeth Dunne suspended the last year of the sentence in view of McGrath's guilty plea.
