A Kilkenny man was convicted yesterday by a Central Criminal Court jury of attempted oral rape and aggravated sexual assault of his grand-niece in 1992.
The 49-year-old married man's trial opened on Tuesday when he pleaded not guilty to a total of 16 charges of rape, attempted oral rape, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and indecent assault on unknown dates from 1985 to 1994.
However, he also affirmed a further six signed district court pleas of guilty to sexually assaulting the now 18-year-old woman from 1990 to 1992.
He was remanded in custody on foot of the eight convictions to November 28th next.
The jury took almost four hours to return guilty verdicts on the aggravated sexual assault and attempted oral rape charges. It also found the man not guilty of the one rape charge and failed to agree verdicts in relation to the remaining 13 charges on the indictment.
