Gardaí were last night questioning a man about the stabbing to death of another man at a house in Co Tipperary in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The victim was named locally as Ciarán Cambridge (45), who lived in Clonmel but was originally from Dillon's Cross, Cork.
Gardaí were alerted at about 2.30am to an incident at a house in the Carrigeen estate in Clonmel. When they arrived at the scene, they found the victim's remains in an upstairs bedroom.
He had been stabbed a number of times, at least once in the chest. A postmortem revealed the victim died from his chest wound. The man, who has a number of children living in Cork, is believed to have been in bed with his partner when the killing took place.
Gardaí are working on the theory that a man broke into the house and went upstairs to where the victim was asleep and fatally stabbed him.
Mr Cambridge's partner called the emergency services immediately. However, despite efforts to save him, the victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
Supt Chris Delaney of Clonmel Garda station appealed for anybody from the town, particularly the Carrigeen estate, who may have information about the killing to come forward.
"Any information will be treated in the strictest confidence," he said.
He added that people from the area may have witnessed events related to the killing and he urged them to come forward and assist the Garda inquiry.
Gardaí arrested a 28-year-old man shortly after beginning their murder investigation. The suspect, who is from Clonmel, was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
He was taken to Clonmel Garda station where he was still being questioned last night. He can be held for up to 24 hours without charge.
He was due to be released or charged in the early hours of this morning.
However, Garda sources last night indicated that the man may appear before the courts as early as today in connection with the killing.
It is believed that the suspect knew the victim, who had been living in Clonmel for about seven months. Gardaí are working on the theory that the arrested man and Mr Cambridge had become embroiled in a dispute.
