Police in Northern Ireland have been given extra time to question a man arrested in England about a gruesome child killing more than 30 years ago.
It was the second time a magistrate had granted police an extra 36 hours to question the suspect (46) who was brought back to Belfast on Monday. He must now either be charged or released by 8 a.m. on Friday.
He is being questioned by detectives about the murder of schoolboy Brian McDermott who disappeared from a playground at Ormeau Park in the south of the city in September 1973.
Nearly a week later the 10-year-old's mutilated torso and arm were dragged from the nearby River Lagan. No one was charged with the killing.
Six months ago, a major reconstruction was staged for the Crimewatch UKtelevision programme to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the murder.
It was that attempt to remind people of the horrors of the killing and led to the suspect being arrested in England.
It is understood he was originally from the same area of east Belfast where Brian lived.
