A man (35) has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a five-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy in a small town in north Wales.

Officers were called to the home in Bodelwyddan shortly before 11.00pm yesterday and discovered the bodies of the young children, who are brother and sister.

Police said postmortems would be carried out on the children later today.

The murders took place at a property in Coronation Close, a street of houses built for Army personnel around the time of the First World War.

North Wales Police confirmed that the man was arrested at the house but a spokeswoman refused to comment on whether he was related to the dead children.

A spokeswoman said: "The 35-year-old man was arrested at the house on Coronation Close. I can't comment at this stage on any possible relationship between the man and the children."

Speaking at a press conference in St Asaph, Detective Superintendent John Chapman, who is leading the investigation, said: "The family of the two children are being comforted by North Wales Police family liaison officers and are extremely traumatised by the deaths. We are currently not in a position to release the details of the deceased."
