A MAN has been remanded in custody charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of his mother in Roscommon town at the weekend.
Paul Henry (25), Abbeytown, Roscommon town, was brought in Garda custody from Roscommon to appear before Galway District Court yesterday morning.
Mr Henry is charged with assaulting his mother, Ann Henry, causing her harm, contrary to section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997, at The Spinney, Abbeytown, last Saturday afternoon.
Garda Ian Delaney of Roscommon Garda station said he arrested Mr Henry at Abbeytown on Saturday and charged him at 10.35pm on Sunday.
He said Mr Henry replied: “I’m pleading not guilty anyway,” when the assault charge was put to him.
His solicitor, Bríd Millar, said she had no objection to her client being remanded in custody, adding that she was deferring a bail application at this stage.
Making an application to the court on behalf of her client for free legal aid, Ms Millar said he was unemployed and in receipt of €186 in social welfare payments a week.
Judge Mary Fahy remanded Mr Henry in custody by consent to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday.
Ms Henry (49) died from multiple stab wounds following an incident at her home last Saturday afternoon.
