A man arrested in connection with one of the most sophisticated counterfeitingoperations ever seen in the State was released without charge thisevening, gardaí said.

The 49-year-old was questioned after gardaí found hi-tech computers andprinting equipment at a house in Dundalk, Co Louth.

The equipment was used to forge high quality documents such as drivinglicences, tax books, car insurance certificates and bank drafts.

Gardaí believe people may have also bought fake electricity bills, which couldserve as proof of address when opening bank accounts for laundering money.

It is believed the documents produced were mostly for use in the Republicbut gardaí said some may also have been created for people across the Border.

Gardaí hoped to identify people in contact with the operation throughinformation held on the computer equipment, which was seized for examination byGarda technical experts.

The man was released earlier this evening. A file was being prepared for theDirector of Public Prosecutions.
