Gardaí investigating the suspicious death of a 42-year-old man in Macroom, Co Cork, last night arrested a man for questioning.

The man aged 30, was arrested in Macroom at about 7.45pm yesterday on suspicion of impeding a Garda investigation into the death of the man, named locally as Don Geasley.

The arrest followed reports that a number of people had been intimidated into not talking to gardaí about the death of Mr Geasley in Masseytown.

The man was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and brought to Bandon Garda station where he can be held for up to 24 hours.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster carry out a postmortem this morning.

The body of Mr Geasley was found at around 10.30am yesterday when his landlord called to the two-storey house in Masseytown which he was renting.

Gardaí cordoned off the scene and contacted the State Pathologist¹s office and Dr Bolster carried out a preliminary examination at the scene.

Gardaí were last night trying to trace the last known movements of Mr Geasley who was found with serious and extensive head injuries.

A native of the Commons Road on the northside of Cork city, Mr Geasley had lived for a number of years in the UK but had moved to Macroom around two years ago.
