Her partially buried body was found 16 days later in a field near the A29 near Pulborough about 15 miles north of where she was last seen.

Sarah had been playing with her brothers Lee, 13, and Luke, 11, and sister Charlotte, 6, after a day on the beach.

An angry crowd of over 200 people chased the vehicle carrying Mr Whiting away from the court.

Some people shouted abuse as the van, escorted by police, sped away.

The van stopped 100 yards down the road at a level crossing. The crowd gave chase but the van sped away before they could reach it.

One person was arrested and an egg was hurled at the vehicle.
