A man charged in connection with the death of a 50-year-old man in Clontarf was remanded in custody for a week at Dublin District Court yesterday.

Michael Downes (41), who is originally from Clare but who the court heard is of no fixed abode, was charged with assault causing serious harm to Finbarr Dennehy.

He was remanded to appear before Cloverhill District Court on Monday.

Mr Dennehy's body was found covered and lying on a couch in his apartment in the Merchamp apartment complex on Seafield Road in Clontarf last Wednesday.

A postmortem revealed that he died of a single stab wound. It is believed he had been dead for several days, although the exact time of death is undetermined.

Det Sgt Paul Slattery of Clontarf Garda station told Judge Hugh O'Donnell that Mr Downes had nothing to say when he was formally charged yesterday.

The defendant, who was dressed in a grey tracksuit, said nothing during the brief court appearance.

He was arrested in Dublin city centre on Saturday evening. No application for bail was made on his behalf.
