Gardaí arrested Mr Griffin in the Knocknacarra area of the city shortly after 7am yesterday and questioned him under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Galway Garda station.
Two women arrested in the city at the same time have been released without charge.
The body of Mr McCormack (52) was found in a plastic container in the cold storage unit attached to the Mermaid Fish Shop on Henry Street in Galway on June 13th.
