A 26-year-old man appeared before Dundalk District Court yesterday charged with assault causing harm to another man who needed hundreds of stitches as a result of his injuries.
The accused, Ciaran McPhillips, Rathmore Cottages, Hackballscross, Dundalk, Co Louth, is alleged to have assaulted Kevin McDonagh (19), causing him harm.
He is charged under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.
Mr McDonagh was assaulted in the early hours of last Sunday morning in the Cox's Demesne area of Dundalk.
At the vacation sitting of the court yesterday, Judge William Hamill asked for an outline of the facts and then ruled it was too serious for the District Court to deal with and refused jurisdiction.
It is alleged that the attack was carried out with a knife and the injured man needed more than 350 stitches.
Mr McPhillips was remanded on bail with a number of conditions attached. These include signing on at Dundalk Garda station and observing a curfew.
The case was adjourned until September 26th. He was granted free legal aid and James MacGuill was appointed his solicitor.
Meanwhile, a 17-year-old Brazilian youth who is charged with assaulting another Brazilian man who later died from his injuries had his case adjourned at the court yesterday.
Garda Sgt Alf Martyn told the court that further more serious charges may be preferred as the injured party had died since the accused was last before the court.
He was Claudio Fernandes (33). He was found stabbed in the head in Duleek town centre on July 29th.
The youth is charged with assault causing harm.
The case was adjourned to Dunleer court sitting in Ardee on September 13th.
