A passenger accused of threatening to blow up a plane bound for Dublin was remanded in custody after appearing in a US court last night.

Aiden Simon Mackle from Northern Ireland is accused of telling Delta Air Lines employees that he was a terrorist after drinking and becoming unruly on a flight from Atlanta, Georgia.

The plane was diverted to Bangor International Airport, Maine, early on Saturday. Court documents alleged Mr Mackle punched an off-duty Delta employee and made threats about either hijacking or destroying the plane.

Mr Mackle (44) will remain in jail pending a second court hearing on Wednesday. He is charged with assault and interfering with a flight crew.
