Gardaí in Buncrana, Co Donegal, are continuing their investigations into a post office robbery which saw the home of an elderly couple being ransacked by raiders on Tuesday evening.

It is understood that a substantial five-figure sum was taken by three men who raided Fahan Post Office on the main Buncrana-Derry road.

According to the gardaí, the intruders called to the couple's home looking for directions. They then burst through the door and assaulted the man before ransacking both the private house and the adjoining post office premises. A firearm was produced but not used. The couple both required medical attention with the man in his 70s being detained in hospital.

Gardaí are following a number of specific lines of inquiry but have appealed for information from the public, in particular in relation to the movements of a small, white or silver car which may have had a Northern Ireland registration mark. They can be contacted at (074) 9361555.
