A man found dead in a suitcase dumped in Dublin's Grand Canal last Friday died from head injuries, a post-mortem has shown.

Gardai investigating the murder say they believe the body of the man in his early 30s may have been in the water for up to three weeks.

The victim was about 5 ft 10 in, sturdily built and was wearing beige corduroy trousers, a black V-neck jumper shirt and a brown leather jacket.

He was not carrying any documents indicating his identity and gardai say they have not yet established whether he was Irish or eastern European or the motive for the killing. "We can't speculate as to a motive and are not following any one line of inquiry at the moment," said an investigating garda at Fitzgibbon Street incident room. Gardai yesterday questioned people attending the Dublin-Sligo GAA match at Croke Park as they walked along the stretch of the canal where the man's body was found, between Binn's Bridge and Jones's Road.

Dublin supporters attending the match may have walked the same route to see their team play Meath a week ago and have information which could help the inquiry.

Gardai also conducted local door-to-door inquiries at the weekend and have checked their missing persons files.

The man's body was found inside the family-sized black nylon suitcase at about 7 p.m. on Friday by two teenage boys. Gardai say his hands were not tied and he had not been mutilated.

A Garda spokesman said last night that a post-mortem carried out by the State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, revealed the man had died of head injuries.

Meanwhile, a post-mortem on the body of a woman found in the River Liffey at Custom House Quay on Saturday morning will be carried out today. The identity of the 44-year-old woman has not yet been released.

It is understood that foul play is not suspected.
