A man was in a stable condition today after being attacked by a masked gang wielding bats in a vicious assault on a farm in Northern Ireland.

The victim suffered fractured arms and legs as well as lacerations to his body in the attack, which happened while he was tending to sheep at a farm building on the Carrickayne Road in Claudy, Co Derry, last night.

He was confronted at around 10.30 p.m. by six masked men armed with wooden bats who beat him around the head and body.

Police are investigating a number of lines of inquiry but at this stage it is understood they are ruling out a sectarian motive.
