A man in his late twenties was seriously injured this evening when he was shot a number of times in the Harold's Cross area of Dublin.

The incident happened at about 6.30pm in a laneway linking the Harold's Cross Road to a nearby playing field.

The victim, a convicted criminal, was taken to St James's Hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination and an incident room has been set up at Terenure Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of Harold's Cross Road between 6pm and 6.30pm this evening to contact them.
