A man has been shot and injured in Co Down.

The man (40) was shot once in the left calf at 8 p.m. at Ardgeehin Gardens in the Kilcooley Estate in Bangor, Co Down, an RUC spokesman said.

The RUC are also continuing to question two men who were arrested after an arms find yesterday. The RUC recovered a sub-machine gun when they stopped a car on the Moira interchange of the M1 motorway outside Belfast.

"We would believe, although it is very early stages, that these people are dissident republicans," RUC Chief Constable Sir Ronnie Flanagan told the BBC last night.

In north Belfast up to 200 loyalists and nationalists threw bricks and bottles at each other across houses and an army barricade shortly before 4.30 p.m.

The trouble flared on the Ardoyne Road, where the protest at Holy Cross Primary School had earlier passed off peacefully.

There were no arrests and no reported injuries.
