A man who raped a 91year-old woman attacked camera men as he was being led from court yesterday. Eamonn Foley (41), a father of three, sacked his defence team after his unanimous conviction and then lunged at the camera men outside Enniskillen court.
Foley, of Dreenan Road in Castlederg, was convicted by a jury of raping the late Ms Mary-Anne McLaughlin two years ago. She was found by neighbours on January 15th, 1999, lying in her bloodsoaked bed in her isolated mobile home just a mile and a half from Foley's house.
Mr Justice Higgins was told that she died several weeks later. Following consultations between the Director of Public Prosecutions and the North's deputy state pathologist, he said that no provable causal link could be made between Foley's attack and Ms McLaughlin's death.
Foley will be sentenced after he appoints new counsel to make a plea of mitigation on his behalf.
