A man in his 30s has died following a road crash in Co Longford this morning.
The incident happened at Monaduff, Drumlish, at 5.30am when the man's car went out of control. There were no passengers in the car.
The death brings to 91 the total of people killed on Irish roads to date this year.
Gardaí today named the man killed in a crash in Co Cavan yesterday as Gerard Fitzpatrick (29), from Belturbet, Co Cavan. He died shortly before 6pm when his bike collided with a tractor on the R198 at Lisnamandra, Crossdoney, Co Cavan.
Seven people died on the State's roads this weekend; eight people died over the St Patrick's bank holiday weekend.
Ahead of the Easter bank holiday weekend, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) today warned motorists about speeding, drink driving and not wearing a seat belt.
"It has been a very dark weekend, and St Patrick's weekend was equally bleak," said RSA chief Noel Brett. "We really have to get people to take personal responsibility for every single action they take on the road and the consequences of it.
"There is nobody in this country who does not know now the risks they take when they go on the road," he added.
Mr Brett said there was now unprecedented levels of public awareness and education and unprecedented levels of enforcement, with 30,000 people a month being breathalysed and one in five motorists having penalty points.
Provisional statistics published by the gardaí today showed 394 drink driving incidents were recorded for last week, 50 incidents less than the previous week.
