Residents said the man (36) was trying to prevent unidentified gunmen from removing the posters of a candidate from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah party when he was shot in the head.

Medical sources said the man died overnight from his wounds.

Israeli and Palestinian security forces have been on heightened alert for violence ahead of tomorrow's parliamentary poll, which could usher the Islamic militant group Hamas into government for the first time.

In an overnight raid in the occupied West Bank, Israeli troops arrested an Islamic Jihad leader and several other members of the militant group, Palestinian sources said.
