A 30-year-old man killed in a shooting accident on St Patrick's Day was named last night as Darren Kiely from Co Limerick.

Mr Kiely, from Patrickswell, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head while shooting targets with a friend at lunchtime on Thursday.

Mr Kiely was accidentally shot by his friend in a secluded laneway beside a farm at Faha, Ballyhanrahan, located outside the village of Patrickswell. A postmortem carried out yesterday by Deputy State Pathologist Margaret Bolster, confirmed he died from a single gunshot wound to his head.

Investigating gardaí have not officially confirmed the sequence of events leading to the accident. However, it is understood Mr Kiely was standing in front of his friend when he was accidentally shot.

Gardaí have confirmed Mr Kiely's friend and former work colleague has provided them with a full statement and no one else is being sought in relation to the incident.

"This was a tragic accident and of course the person who was with the deceased is deeply shocked," said a Garda spokesman.

"The exact details are still under investigation but we are satisfied that it was an accident and no one else is being sought in relation to our investigation," he added.

Mr Kiely had recently moved to Limerick city and is survived by his parents and partner.
