Man murdered in Thurles of east European origin

Gardaí have identified the man who was murdered in Thurles last weekend

Gardaí have identified the man who was murdered in Thurles last weekend. Although of eastern European origin, they declined to specify his nationality or name last night as they were trying to contact his family.

Supt Tony Cogan, who is leading the murder investigation, said gardaí received "numerous calls" following an appeal through the media for information. They were also "getting great assistance from Interpol".

The man, who died of a stab wound, was in his 30s. He had been in Ireland for "a couple of years" and was working "some of the time" in the Thurles area.

He had been living in a rented house in the town with two other people from eastern Europe who were not family. They have made themselves known to gardaí and have "provided great support to the investigation and helped to identify the deceased".

The man's naked body was found at 7.30pm in the Railway Field on the Nenagh Road. However, it is not yet known exactly when or where he died.

Supt Cogan said State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy, who carried out a postmortem on Monday, "may be able to establish an approximate time of death to within seven hours".

He said it would appear that the man died "at the weekend", and "the scene of death was in the general locality".

He again appealed for anyone who saw any suspicious activity last weekend in the general area to contact gardaí in Thurles.

The field where the body was found is close to Semple Stadium where a crowd of 21,500 people attended hurling matches last Sunday afternoon.
