A man alleged to be one of Ireland's top brothel-keepers was arrested yesterday on charges of tax evasion. Mr Thomas McDonnell (46), of Lower Grattan Street, Dublin, was arrested by members of the Criminal Assets Bureau.

He was charged with 17 offences relating to tax returns, including failing to make tax returns for the years 1988-89 to 1996-97, and with knowingly making false returns to the tax inspector for the years 1992-93 to 1996-97. He made no reply after being charged.

In Dublin District Court, Judge Michael Connellan remanded him on his own bail of £500 to September 9th for the DPP's directions.
