Mr Michael McMahon SC, prosecuting, said the guilty pleas were accepted on the basis that all the evidence would be presented to the court.

Mr Justice Carney said that in the normal course of events the case would not be dealt with until October, but he was not prepared to let it drift until then.

Remanding the defendant on bail to July 24th, he said there might be complaints from the Probation Service that it was being put under pressure.

But he said the remand on bail would facilitate the preparation of a report and added: "People will have to apply themselves."

Mr Justice Carney also warned that the State could apply to have the man's bail withdrawn if there was any incident, down to a cross look, before the next hearing.

A Garda sergeant had said the defendant was barred from the house and was living elsewhere. Recently children of a family he knew had had an argument with members of the victims' family after a disco. The defendant was not involved.
