A 32-year-old man arrested following disturbances between rival factions of the same Traveller family in the north Co Galway area was remanded in custody at a special sitting of Galway District Court yesterday.

Mr Edward Ward, with an address at Gilmartin Road, Tuam, faced a charge of causing criminal damage to a house in his street when he appeared before Judge Michael Patwell. He was remanded in custody to Castlerea prison and ordered to appear before the court again on Tuesday.

His arrest on Tuesday followed street clashes between a number of Travellers in Gilmartin Road in the early hours of the morning. Tension had been high in the area since scuffles broke out at the weekend and gardai investigating the disturbances seized a number of slash-hooks. Six people were taken to hospital following the incidents.

Last night gardai confirmed that their investigations into the incidents were continuing. They said they still wanted to interview a number of people in connection with the disturbances.
