A Corkman who was charged with possessing £130,000 worth of cannabis resin was remanded in custody with consent to bail when he appeared at a special sitting of Cork District Court yesterday.

Judge Terence Finn was told that Mr Pat O'Mahoney, of Dominick Street, Cork, was involved in a row at his apartment during which he was stabbed, leaving him seriously injured.

His life-threatening injuries caused him to be hospitalised for six weeks and when gardai searched the apartment on June 16th last, they found 13 kg of cannabis worth £130,000 on the streets, and £26,000 cash was seized.

Insp Tom Myers said he believed the assault on Mr O'Mahoney was drug-related and the money found in his flat was being held for somebody else.

Information received by the Garda suggested that if Mr O'Mahoney was granted bail he would leave the jurisdiction. Further serious charges were being prepared, he added.

Mr O'Mahoney said he was still incapacitated and promised that if bail was granted he would remain in Cork.

He said he would have to undergo further surgery for his injuries.

Judge Finn said he was satisfied Mr O'Mahoney could be remanded in custody with consent to bail.

He set bail of £15,000 as well as an independent surety of £45,000 and stipulated that one third of each sum would have to be lodged in cash in the court.

Mr O'Mahoney was also ordered to reside at his parents' house at Edward Walsh Road, Togher, Cork, and to sign on each day at the local Garda station.

Mr O'Mahoney was further ordered not to seek a replacement passport and to give 48 hours' notice to the court if the bail money was produced.
