The Spanish authorities issued a warrant for the arrest of Mr Michael Dermot McArdle, 32, after his wife, Kelly-Anne fell to her death from a hotel balcony on the Costa Del Sol.

Detective Sergeant Martin O'Neill told Dublin District Court that he arrested Mr McArdle, of Haggartstown, Drogheda, County Louth, and served him with the warrant.

He said Mr McArdle was wanted in connection with the alleged murder of his wife in Marbella on February 13th, 2000.

It was thought initially that the mother-of-two died accidentally in the fall from the fourth floor.

But Spanish police launched an investigation into the death, which happened on the first day of the week-long holiday.

Mr McArdle and Kelly-Anne, nee Corcoran, were living in Wheaton Hall, Drogheda, Co Louth at the time of her death.

He will appear at Cloverhill District Court on Friday.
