A Co Tyrone man was yesterday remanded in custody at a special sitting of Portlaoise District Court, charged with dangerous driving causing death.

Mr Gerard Devine (22) of Owenreigh Drive, Strabane, was driving a car that plunged into the River Swilly at Drumnahough, Letterkenny, on Sunday.

Mr Mark Gallagher (21) of Killygorden, Co Donegal, who was also in the car, died as a result of the accident.

Garda Michael O'Donovan told the court that Mr Devine replied, "nothing to say," when the charge was put.

Insp Philip Lyons told Judge Michael Connellan that as Mr Devine was resident outside the jurisdiction the Garda would be seeking substantial bail.

The defending solicitor, Ms Bernadette Greene, said Mr Devine was not making an application for bail at this time and was consenting to a remand in custody.

Judge Connellan remanded Mr Devine to Mountjoy Prison, to appear at Donegal District Court on Thursday.
