Man remanded over Cork murder

A 46-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged in connection with the murder of a woman in Co Cork last month.

A 46-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged in connection with the murder of a woman in Co Cork last month.

Derrick Daly, with an address at St Vincent’s Hostel, Anglesea Terrace, Anglesea Street, Cork, appeared at Midleton District Court this morning charged with the murder of Catherine Smart (57) at Bailick Court in Midleton on April 4th.

The partially-clothed body of Ms Smart, a mother of three, was found at her house on Easter Sunday morning. A postmortem revealed she had sustained a number of blows to the back of the head.

Mr Daly was arrested in Midleton last night.

Det Sgt Joe O’Connor gave evidence today of arrest, charge and caution. He told the court Mr Daly had “nothing to say” when charged.

Inspector Eoin Healy applied for a remand in custody to May 20th.

The accused’s solicitor, Donal Daly, said he had no objection to the request.

Judge Michael Pattwell remanded Mr Daly, a native of Enfield, Co Meath, in custody to appear again at Midleton District Court on May 20th. He also granted him free legal aid.
