A man appeared in court in Britain today charged with the INLA murder of a soldier in Derby 18 years ago, police said.
Sgt Michael Newman (34), a Royal Signal Corps recruitment officer, was shot in the head when leaving an army recruitment office in Derby in April 1992. He died from his wounds the following day.
The murder was claimed by the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA).
Derbyshire police said Declan Duffy (36), appeared before magistrates in Chesterfield this morning, charged with murder.
Police said it was a closed hearing at an “undisclosed court”.
Duffy, a father of two, is originally from Armagh but with an address at Hanover Street West, Dublin. He is in custody in relation to other matters and is due to be released from prison in July 2011.
He was extradited to Britain from Ireland on foot of a European Arrest warrant. The UK authorities claim he, on the afternoon of April 13th 1992, murdered Sgt Newman. Duffy is also charged with conspiracy to commit murder on dates between January 1st 1992 and April 13th 1992.
In 2004 Joseph Magee was jailed for 25 years after pleading guilty to Sgt Newman’s murder.
